July 2018 How Was Orderman Founded?

Orderman turns 25 this year! But how did the idea for radio ordering develop in the first place?

Salzburg, 1993. It is a hot summer evening in early August, and three young inventors – Alois, Franz and Gottfried – are seated in their favorite (overcrowded) beer garden. They are planning on joining forces to develop an innovative new product together. They aren’t sure what it will be yet, but they know they want to create something that will provide a real, unquestionable advantage. Something that will improve the world, even if it is just in a small way.

28°C make people thirsty... and impatient

Because it is hard to think clearly with a dry throat and an empty stomach, they signal their server Lena that they are ready to order. After a while she notices them, and they ask for their usual beers, along with a traditional farmer’s plate of cold cuts. None of them are aware at that point, that this particular order will lead to the founding of Orderman. The wait for their beers on this balmy summer evening seems unbearably long. It was this experience that served as inspiration for today’s renowned “radio ordering” solution...

Service Staff – Stressed and Overwhelmed

Twenty minutes for a beer? Sure, it’s peak time but service should be faster, right? The three men observe their server’s movements closely and quickly find the bottleneck – it's the server herself! She is totally overwhelmed, rushing from table to table, and doesn’t have a second to share orders with her colleagues behind the bar and in the kitchen. She dashes to table 1, scribbles the orders on a notepad, runs to table 2 and takes more orders, then guests at tables 3 and 4 wish to order as well. Under such stress, it takes her far too long to reach their table. In the 15 minutes of hectic running from one customer to the next, not a single order has reached the kitchen or bar yet. Only once Lena has entered the orders from all four tables in to the POS terminal, do the orders go to the kitchen and bar printers. Now her colleagues can finally get to work.

Eliminate Waiting Times!

The three inventors agree on one thing: They have to help overwhelmed Lena! If they could find a way to get her order to the bar and kitchen without delay, Lena would be less stressed and her guests would receive their beer and food without delay. This could be a product to match their taste: a world without unnecessarily long waits for orders. Lena and her fellow servers could then focus on the most important thing: making their customers happy!

From an Idea to Global Leader

That’s how the idea for radio ordering was born. The three founders quickly recorded their idea on a beer coaster and after a year of hard work and intense testing, they held the first Orderman prototype in their hands. And 25 years later? Today, NCR Orderman is the global market leader in radio ordering solutions, providing the hospitality business with a wide range of highly reliable, long-lasting handhelds and POS systems.

Lena’s daughter also works as a server – but instead of a notepad she uses the new Orderman5 – and she would never trade it in for anything else!

June 2018 Orderman7 drives efficient service

It is a challenge to get everything to the table on time, especially when many different items are ordered at once. For this reason, Iain Gallie, operations manager at Mezzidakia, chose the Orderman7.

Guests at Mezzidakia experience a great culinary journey through the eastern Mediterranean with every visit. The restaurant is the latest concept in a total of six popular Glasgow dining destinations. Located directly in the City Center, unmistakable flavors from Turkey, Morocco, Lebanon, Persia and Greece provide an excellent tapas-style menu.

To ensure every guest’s dining experience is perfect, the Operations Manager Iain Gallie decided to go with Orderman. Six Orderman7 handhelds with software created by ICR Touch were installed by our partner Alliance Till Systems, giving staff at the Mezzidakia the right tools to provide Mediterranean style hospitality at all times.

“Alongside an excellent menu, it is important to our guests that the food is brought to their table on time. This requires good service staff and the right tools to help them do their jobs. We were looking for a mobile ordering system that worked – but we definitely did not want a WiFi-based system. We tried a WiFi system in one of our other restaurants and it constantly crashed. At Alliance Till Systems, we trust the dealer and were given good advice. We are very happy that we chose the reliable Orderman Secure Radio system,” says Iain Gallie.

He also explains that the Orderman solution lets his service staff spend more time with the guests, because it is no longer necessary to enter orders at the till. The Orderman7’s durability and ease of use also make the solution a worthwhile investment in the long-term.

March 2018 Orderman5 on tour in Europe

The Orderman5 has been touring the most important trade fairs in Germany, Spain, Italy and France.

The Orderman5 prototype had its premiere for the public in early February at the Intergastra trade show in Stuttgart. Here, attendees had the chance to handle and test out as many as 30 units at exhibitor booths.

Around the same time, the Hotel Riva Expo was held at Lake Garda, which has been one of the best attended trade shows for hospitality and professional catering in the European region for over 40 years. Here, our Italian colleagues presented visitors with the new Orderman5.

In Spain, the Orderman5 was exhibited at two trade shows: at the H&T hotel and restaurant expo in Málaga and at Hospitality Innovation Planet in Madrid. Both trade shows are international gathering points for industry professionals interested in the latest hot topics and innovations.

The Orderman5 was also presented at two trade shows in France: the Agecotel show in Nice and the Salon Breizh in Rennes. At both expos, everything revolved around hotel, retail and cooperative hospitality. Visitors got an overview of the latest products, services and trends of tomorrow. Finally, the Orderman5 created a buzz at the EuroCIS trade show in Dusseldorf and at Internorga in Hamburg!

February 2018 Ensure your lithium-ion battery pack lasts longer!

With proper handling, you can extend the life of our lithium-ion battery.

The most influential factors in the aging process of a lithium ion battery are, first, the charging cycles and, second, the temperatures to which the battery is subjected. It functions on the principle of the movement of ions (i.e. electrically charged atoms) between the positive and the negative electrode.  This movement causes the battery to age and thus its performance decreases over time, like the battery of a mobile phone.

With normal use, we recommend replacing the battery of Orderman handhelds every 2 to 3 years to ensure proper operation.

To ensure that your lithium-ion battery ages as slowly as possible, we have prepared the following care instructions for you:

1.  Store your battery at room temperature (20-25°C). The worst thing that can happen to a lithium-ion battery is for it to be exposed to elevated temperatures in a fully charged state. Heat is by far the most significant factor in reducing the service life of a battery.

2.   Unused replacement batteries also age. All batteries age over time, regardless of whether or not you use them. For this reason it is not worthwhile to buy in bulk and stock up, since unused batteries last just as long as those that are used daily.

3.  Do not store battery packs fully charged. Avoid "continuous charging" and use replacement batteries which are stored in the charging station regularly.

Get the most out of your lithium-ion battery!

November 2017 Orderman in, tablets out: The Tavern adopts professional solution!

As a US citizen, the owner Keith Gurney has adopted the American style of service at his restaurant. Staff at The Tavern are well equipped to provide guests with an outstanding service experience.

Seven Orderman7 handhelds allow for a fast and reliable placement of orders, as well as accurate billing and an efficient work flow.

“The use of the stable Orderman Secure Radio instead of WIFI and the unrivalled build quality were the main reasons for choosing Orderman hardware”, says Keith Gurney.

“The Secure Radio is a closed system, which we have found to be much more reliable than any WIFI based products we have tried. We tested the handhelds on site and found that they have a 200-meter range. When we dropped them down several flights of stairs, they were still in perfect working condition”, he goes on.

Previously, The Tavern had used solutions based on Android tablets. The hardware was damaged regularly despite the use of protective cases, leaving the owner with replacement costs that were spinning out of control.

“The Orderman handhelds allow a level of confidence that hardware will be up and running every day, without need for backups or replacements”, Mr. Gurney tells us.

August 2017 Thank-you to Our Employees with a Service Anniversary!
